The challenge was to design an identity system and supporting graphics for the 2016 ArtsX event at Bowling Green State University, hosted annually in December. ArtsX celebrates the creative and dynamic spirit of the arts at BGSU, with a vibrant atmosphere where performances, exhibitions, demonstrations, and sales converge.
Our design team—Kalia Johnson, Victoria Nuss, and Aly Krajewski—collaborated to conceptualize the event’s theme, inspired by a guest artist specializing in aerial performances. We named the event VOLANTI – Seeking Unknown Heights, reflecting the soaring aspirations and transformative energy of the arts. The visual identity embraced this theme through a series of cloud-inspired designs in bold, explosive colors, evoking the phantasmagorical nature of the event.
The project involved consistent client collaboration, with formal presentations to the ArtsX Steering Committee at each project phase to ensure alignment with their vision. The final deliverables included a series of dynamic posters designed to create a repeating pattern and large-scale visual impact, as well as additional collateral such as print advertisements, social media graphics, event and room signage, programs, digital schedules, maps, and buttons.
Additionally, a video-based Instagram campaign was produced, counting down to the event and featuring videos co-created with digital artists Helen Holman and Hailey Ameling. This campaign effectively built anticipation for the event by highlighting its dynamic and immersive atmosphere, further engaging the community in the lead-up to the celebration.
Overall, this project embodied the creative ethos of ArtsX, elevating its mission to engage the public and showcase the innovation and collaboration that define the arts at BGSU.
In recognition of our work, our design trio was honored with the American Advertising Federation’s Silver ADDY Award, celebrating outstanding contributions to creative excellence in advertising. The award underscores the project’s success in furthering industry standards and responsibility while capturing the vibrant spirit of the ArtsX event.
